Psychotherapy Groups

Group Therapy can be beneficial to those seeking a small, supportive environment while they address specific issues such as trauma, stress or anxiety. Often led by one or more clinicians, therapy groups can offer clients support and understanding as an effective method to treat the types of concerns that are commonly experienced. Clients may solely attend group therapy but many attend as a supplement to their ongoing individual therapy.

Groups are held in-person, virtually, or in a hybrid format. Please check the particular group you are interested in for session details.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is group therapy?

Group therapy is a form of psychotherapy in which multiple participants meet with one or more therapists in a supportive setting to address shared concerns, develop coping strategies, and learn from the experiences of others. Group therapy may focus on specific emotional, behavioral, or relationship concerns and can provide both professional guidance and peer support.

Who can benefit from group therapy?

Group therapy can benefit people who are experiencing concerns such as anxiety, stress, trauma, grief, relationship challenges, or other difficulties that may be addressed in a group setting. It can also be helpful for individuals who value connection and the opportunity to learn from others with similar experiences. Each group has its own focus and participation requirements.

What types of therapy groups does ITI-NJ offer?

ITI-NJ offers therapy groups that address specific concerns, skills, or life circumstances. Group offerings may change over time based on client needs, clinician availability, and scheduled programs. Each group listing provides information about its focus, format, schedule, and registration process.

How are therapy groups structured?

Therapy groups are generally facilitated by one or more clinicians and may include guided discussion, skill-building exercises, psychoeducation, and opportunities for participants to share experiences. The structure, frequency, group size, and length of treatment vary depending on the particular group.

Are therapy groups confidential?

Yes. Confidentiality is an important part of group therapy, and participants are expected to respect the privacy of other group members. Group guidelines and expectations are established to help create a safe and supportive environment. Participants should understand that confidentiality in a group setting depends on everyone respecting these expectations.

Do I need to be in individual therapy before joining a therapy group?

Not necessarily. Some people participate in group therapy as their primary form of treatment, while others participate in a group as a supplement to ongoing individual therapy. The clinician or group facilitator can help determine whether a particular group is appropriate based on your needs and the goals of the group.

Are therapy groups available online or in person?

ITI-NJ therapy groups may be offered in person, virtually, or in a hybrid format, depending on the particular group. Group listings provide information about the format and participation requirements. Learn more about teletherapy services at ITI-NJ.
